ARTIST STATEMENT

My art is an indirect result of a lifelong passion for music and a three-decade career in the entertainment industry. Starting in the 90s, I found myself immersed in the raw energy of the Seattle grunge scene as a music engineer. I worked with legendary bands like Pearl Jam, Alice N' Chains, and The Screaming Trees, as well as notable artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This work gave me a deep understanding of an instrument's power and soul.

In 2013, I left the entertainment industry. I transitioned my art as well, moving from an acrylic painting to building cigar box guitars with the dramatic eye of a painter, and then, when the need to compose imagery boiled back to the surface, I started the collage art series. The changes in my artistic direction allow me to maintain my connection to the music community that has so enriched my life.

I focus on two distinct series: traditional cigar box guitars and collage art guitars. My cigar box guitars provide access to the instrument on which much of our blues and folk music was originally written and played on. In my collage art guitars, I use the guitar body as a canvas for mixed-media collage, weaving visual narratives around the body of the instrument. My goal is to create functional art that the visual, tactile, and auditory senses can enjoy. My work is a balance of craftsmanship and "mojo". I’m always creating for myself, but I can’t possibly keep everything.
